The word Jesus in the New Testament Greek is the translation of the Old Testament Hebrew word Joshua (deliverer/savior).  Jesus is the new Joshua whose conquest is to “deliver His people from their sins”.  He enters the heart for emancipation purposes.  We have sadly reduced the word saved to being forgiven.  We need the new Joshua to deliver us from sin by dealing with inherited and acquired tendencies and thought processes from which sin springs.

Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:34-36 (NASB)
