Our Father (D)

“Our Father who is in Heaven, Hallowed be your name” (Matthew 6:9). The word “Hallowed” literally means in the Greek: “Let your name be sanctified”.   Your name (i. e. your character and person) is set apart from all beings in the universe.   This is a prayer for revelation of God’s holiness to the one who prays.  He is set apart from the world He has made.  He is set apart from all evil, sin and moral defilement.  The one who is praying is to recognize the holiness of God.  This is designed to check our irreverence and over-familiarity with God.  God is not just “one of the boys”.  It is also designed to balance our understanding of the kind of Father He is.  Jesus called Him, “Holy Father”.
