“And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb” (Luke 2:21 ESV).  The One who was named Jesus before His conception has always been.  He was the eternal Son of the eternal Father.  He was named Jesus on the day He received the mark of the covenant.  Being thus baptized into the faith of Israel, He would be the very one who would fulfill the faith of Israel; He would establish a New Covenant by His own blood.  He who is named Jesus, Joshua in Hebrew, shows us the Savior who would take up where Moses left off.  The law condemned us, it could not save us, but grace could and did.

“For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” John 1:16-18 (ESV)
