“You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (John 5:39-40 NIV).  They thought they had eternal life in their Bibles, but according the Jesus, they were wrong.  The Bible points to the One in whom we have life.  It is sadly possible to memorize the whole Bible and not know Jesus.  It is possible to be conversant in great theology with no intimate connection to the highest point of theology, Jesus Himself.  It is possible to read the Bible and develop a strong moral code and never follow our Lord in real discipleship.  It is possible to be a faithful attender of the church without a daily walking relationship with the Messiah.  “Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” (Ephesians 5:14b).
