If Jesus was fully God and fully man, then the tears Jesus shed are the tears of God.   “The God Who Prays Is Also The God Who Cries.  The very thought of the tears of God has moved me deeply.  God is not the Unmoved Mover.  The God revealed in the Holy Scriptures is a God of compassion.  The God fully revealed in Jesus of Nazareth is a God who can cry.  God is like Christ. There are three New Testament references to times that Jesus shed tears. (From “The Self-Talk of God”, by H. Lamar Smith)

  1. John 11:35 at the tomb of Lazarus, “Jesus Wept”.
  2. Luke 19:41, the reference to Jesus weeping over the city of Jerusalem.  “And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it.”
  3. Hebrews 5:7, the tears of Jesus as a part of His prayer life. “In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.” (NRSV)
