I learned a new word, doomscrolling; “it is the act of consuming an endless procession of negative online news, to the detriment of the scroller’s mental wellness”.  It is reading bad news, following message after message and blog after blog, clicking more bad news because it is consuming us.  We are compellingly drawn to it; we are drowning in it.  Click baiters know it and provide more.  It leads to anxiety and depression.  The newsfeed now controls our feelings.  We become evangels of gloom that hate people who do not embrace all the stuff “we know” and can “prove”.  We think ourselves quite right and quite well, not knowing that we are spreaders of our own sickness.  The antidote to all this has to be living with the good news of Jesus, seeing His good work in other people, and to rip ourselves away from doomscrolling by the grace of the Spirit producing self-control in our lives.

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.  What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8–9 (ESV)
