We all desire to be accepted as a person of value.  The culture defines that we are valuable if we look a certain way, possess certain things, think correctly and run with those who do.  Desire for acceptance is a desire the Tempter exploits.  He entices us to give up what God wants so we can be like them.  The answer is not rugged individualism, but it is to know that God values and loves the uniqueness of each of us.  Rest in that.  Grow in that.

“Are not two sparrows sold for a cent?  And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.  But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows” Matthew 10:29-31 (NASB).
