Israel was forbidden to worship in the manner of their neighbors because Israel’s God was very different from their gods. Their neighbors believed that their gods could be induced into doing certain things if the worshipers did certain things. This put the worshippers in the driver’s seat. We worship “I AM WHO I AM.” In Hebrew it means, “I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE.” His very name says that He will not be manipulated. We do not shape Him. He shapes us. -HLS
