N. T. Wright reminds us that standing in the background, before and behind sin, is a failure to worship. Indeed, this is what happened in Eden. Adam wanted to become a god rather than fully worship the one true God. Idolatry! That is the apple! It still is! It is to “exchange the truth of God for the lie.” The lie is that something can fill the place that belongs to God. Failure to worship God is the vacuum into which an idol quickly enters. The most dangerous thing we can fail to do is to worship.
“For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.” Romans 1:25 (NASB)
