The words “believe in Jesus” is far more than mental assent. Believe is a bigger word in Greek than it is in English; let’s explore it. It means, “Whoever trusts his whole being on Him will have eternal life.” It means, “Whoever adheres to Him and becomes one in solidarity with Him will have eternal life”. It means, “Whoever relies on Him with his whole self shall have eternal life.” It means, “Whoever stakes his whole life on Jesus will not perish but have eternal life.” To believe-in means to embrace His way of doing things. It is to adhere to Him in such a way that one lives by all of His teachings. It is to rest fully and wholly in the God who came down to be one with us so that we could, by this kind of belief, become one with Him.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NASB)
