David could have rejoiced over the death of his old enemy Saul.  He did not.  Instead he composed an amazing psalm and commissioned it to be sung by the nation (2 Samuel 1:17-27).  He could not feel good nor gloat over the demise and death of King Saul.  If there is something in me that is elated over the fall of another person, then I have a sin problem as real as theirs.  Know your heart!  Know the roots of your feelings!  David found that he could only weep.  Sadness and sorrow is the only viable response to another’s failure and sin.

And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son,…and he said it should be taught to the people of Judah;…He said: “Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!…You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul” 2 Samuel 1:17-18, 24(ESV).
