When Jesus washed the disciples feet He asked them, “Do you know what I have done?” —meaning— “Do you know why I have done this?” It was surely bigger than an act to be enshrined as a sacrament. It was a message to bickering disciples who wanted to be greater than each other. It is still a message to our private thoughts where we think of ourselves as better than our peers. It is a message that reminds us that our real assignment is to serve each other, and “in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves” (Philippians 2:3). I think we know what it means, but I fear we have not yet put it into a comprehensive way of life.
