Jesus turned tables over in His temple. He saw His house become a house of merchandise, devoid of real worship, and was outraged by it. Well, let’s bring this closer home, since we are the temple. “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NASB). But now that you are the dwelling place of God’s Spirit, know that He is going to claim you as His own house. You are His house by right of creation, redemption and infilling; your house is now His house. Here are some tables that He will overturn. Your claim to you. A self-focused life in place of a Christ-centered life. Pretense. Play acting. Worship that is about us and not about Him. Using Him for our own ends. Fall down among the overturned tables and your scattered coins and gladly let Him have His temple back.
“When they arrived back in Jerusalem, Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people buying and selling animals for sacrifices. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves, and he stopped everyone from using the Temple as a marketplace. He said to them, ‘The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer for all nations,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves’” (Mark 11:15–17 NLT).
