There is something about democratic Western culture that sees no one over us. We feel so self-sufficient that we don’t need anyone. Everyone is our equal and none are “above” us. We are all indebted to our spiritual fathers! Our mentors. Our examples. Our shepherds. The Lord serves us in His servants. We all need those “over us in the Lord.” An attitude of submission, respect and honor are needed to preserve community and for personal growth.
“Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other” 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (NIV).
