Jesus on the cross is “the image of the invisible God”.  The God Moses could not see in the burning bush has been revealed to us in the Crucified God on the cross.  We think of the image as merely mystical; on the cross, it was made visible for all to see.   Look at the cross to see what God is like; look at his suffering and His response to it and you will see your Father.  In the cross we see the solidarity of the Father with the Son.  We see that “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself.”    God was in Christ suffering, praying, weeping and saving.  Christ is the image, the Icon of the invisible God.

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:15-17 (NRSV)
