The earliest confession and creed of Christians was , “Jesus is Lord.” It was a subversive confession that could cost you your life. It was heard as very political; if Jesus is Lord, then Caesar is not Lord. When Jesus and His disciples proclaimed, “The Kingdom of God has arrived”, it shook the other kingdom to the core. Even the story of the Wise men is one where Herod is not going to tolerate the idea of another king in his kingdom, even if it is a baby. Mary’s hymn sang of the arrival of another kingdom. Isaiah’s prophecy was seen as fulfilled in the birth of Jesus; “The government shall be on His shoulders” (Isaiah 9:6).
“He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty” -Mary, Luke 1:51-53 (ESV)
