We associate the serpent with the old tempting serpent in Eden.  Moses used a brass serpent on a pole to save Israel from the bites of serpents in the wilderness.  Who would ever think of a serpent being the symbol of Christ on the cross?  Who would ever think that the One who did not sin became sin?  Who would have thought that by looking at the uplifted serpent one could live?  Indeed, Jesus does free us from the bite of sin!  Indeed, we can “Look and Live, look to Jesus now and live”.  The uplifted One delivers us from death!  In Him we are healed!

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.” John 3:14-15 (NASB)
