You may live with a room in your heart called sadness. There are no walls around this room, only a vapor barrier that does not always hold. You learn to know that it is there; you respect its presence, never denying it. But you also learn that it is not always safe to go there; it can be debilitating. You live knowing that a changing breeze in the house can push it stiflingly close. There is a cross hanging in the main room, and as you pray and surrender, sadness drifts toward the cross to the point they are nearly indistinguishable. In that moment you have given it one more time to Jesus; you open a window and a settled serenity comes in and you see rays of joy coming from the Risen Son.
