Rocks have always been seen as places of refuge from the pursuit of one’s enemies, and a hiding place when under attack. Rocks lend themselves to these images because they are strong and solid. Jesus ended the Sermon on the Mount by contrasting rock to sand as a life’s foundation. Jesus is called the cornerstone or keystone in the New Testament. He is also called the foundation stone. Build on the Rock! Flee to the Rock! Stand on the Rock! It is safe there.
“Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.” Psalm 61:1-3 (ESV)
