Paul writes of those who “hold to a form of godliness, but have denied its power” (2 Tim 3:5). The real power of godliness is the power of love. It is to love God with one’s whole being and one’s neighbor as themselves. Instead, these of whom Paul writes are captivated by love of self, money and pleasure (vv. 2-4). They feel empowered by false loves, rejecting the power of real love. In their “form of godliness” they look very religious, gaining whatever power that gives them. Yet, they know nothing about living the real transforming power of a love centered in God and others.
Father, help us to embrace the real power of love that is the foundation of true godliness. May we guard against misdirected loves that leave our lives in denial of Your real power. Amen!
