The word Jesus in the NT Greek is the translation of the OT Hebrew word Joshua (deliverer/savior). Joshua is known for his conquest of the Promised Land. Jesus is the new Joshua whose conquest is to “save His people from their sins”. We have sadly reduced “saved” to being forgiven. We need the new Joshua to deliver/save us from sin by dealing with inherited and acquired tendencies and thought processes from which sin springs. He enters the heart for these emancipation purposes.
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:34-36 (NASB)
