Our need to be right is a barrier to discovering new information. It keeps us from really hearing other opinions, and thus hurts community. It keeps us from the repeated surrenders that get us beyond our present state, hampering growth in grace. Its pride and arrogance prevent us from apologizing and asking forgiveness when it is sorely needed. We do not have to be right. We do need to pursue right, but we may find it in the opinion of someone else instead of our own. It is right to be humble and teachable.
“Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to advice.” Pr 12:15 (NRSV)
