Forgive Us
“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (Matthew 6:12). The word translated “debt” here is rendered “trespass” (Mark) and “sin” (Luke). The basic meaning takes in all infractions against God. “Debt” speaks of the fact that I owe a moral debt of righteousness to God and my fellow humans. When I fail to give it to Him and sin I am in His debt. “Trespass” God’s law always protects something holy. To break His law is to trespass rough shod on holy ground. It is to walk on forbidden territory.
