God grieves over human sin. He suffers because of it. The cross is the open display of that grief and suffering for all the world to see. It was God’s way, the lifting up of Himself as the suffering God, of drawing all people to Himself. “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (John 12:32 ESV). In the cross we see the God who is; there is no other. He, by unrelenting love, has shown Himself to be the friend of sinners. He loves them; He sees them. He hears their cry; He intercedes for them. Come to His cross; you are welcomed by God and to God at that sacred place.
