John deliberately begins his gospel as a parallel to the Genesis creation story. John tells us how the Word existed before the world and that the Word created the world. Both books start with, “In the beginning”. Another striking parallel is that of light. “Let there be light” and “There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every human” (Jn 1:9). Your new creation story begins by the Spirit brooding over your heart and saying, “Let there be light”. The Light births us out of the darkness into new day, and we are born of God. Hallelujah!
“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’” John 8:12 (NASB)
