Isaiah 58:7 (NIV) “Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter– when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”
In the process of caring for others, we should not neglect our own families, immediate and extended. The Pharisees could declare all their property dedicated to God to exempt them from caring for their parents (Mark 7:10-13). Jesus exposed the scheme for what it was, a violation of the very intent of “Honor your father and mother.” Isaiah’s Fast reminds us, In caring for the needs of others, do not forget those closest to you.
