GMO stands for “Genetically Modified Organism”. This is a practice that involves changing the genetics of a plant in order to alter some aspect of its nature for some desired end. Genetically modified food is banned in parts of the world for health reasons. Jesus, in the parable of the sower, tells how “The sower sows the word” (Mark 4:14); the word has power to produce fruit. But if the gospel is modified in its content, then the kind of fruit that it will produce is not the fruit that the original DNA of the gospel would have produced. The seed of the gospel of the kingdom is about personal transformation resulting in justice, righteousness, and Christlikeness. The gospel is changed by some for power, control manipulation and even for political ends: these are GMO gospels that can’t produce the true fruits of the Kingdom of God.
“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:6–9 ESV)
