Mary mistook Jesus for the Gardener on the day He arose. What a blessed mistake! He it was who made the heavens and the earth. He it was who planted Eden. Our Lord made all things and “without Him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3-4). He put a man and a woman in His garden to tend it. He sends seed sowers in our life. He sends those who water. He prunes (John 15:2). He gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6-7). He relishes seeing us bloom and bear fruit; He prizes seeing the fruit of love in us (John 15:9-12). The Risen Lord is also our Gardener.
“Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).” John 20:14–16 (ESV)
