Jesus said to religious leaders, “You are from your father, the devil.” How can it be that religious folks have the devil as their father instead of God? It happens because they have lost their absolute commitment to truth. They are more interested in their own truth, position and power than the truth that comes from God. They lie against the truth. God’s children love truth and keep coming back to it, even if it calls for their repentance. Love of truth declares our ancestry. Our behaviors declare who our father is.
“You are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44 (NRSV)
