Jesus went to the cross to rescue the rejected by Himself being rejected. He did not come to throw anyone under the bus. He did not come to call down fire from heaven on anyone. “He could have called ten-thousand angels,” but did not. The world He created was going down, and He rescued it by coming down, and going down to the depths of suffering and death to liberate it and to liberate us. The proof that He did is His own resurrection.
“The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life–only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” John 10:17-18 (NIV)
