“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness” (1 Peter 2:24a NIV). “Bore” here is the idea of carrying a very heavy burden. Our sins are the heavy burden that He bore on the cross; it pressed Him to the ground on the way to Golgotha. His sinless soul took this burden as an act of love; it weighed Him down to His death. Why did He bear this sin-burden? He did it to take the burden off our shoulders so that we would no longer be the slave to sin (Romans 6:1-14); He did it so that we might die to sin and live lives of right action (righteousness). What a Savior!
