The idea expressed in Jonathan Edward’s sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” has taken us to some bad places. First of all, Jesus showed God to be a friend of sinners. Second, we are all to have the disposition and attitude of God, the one that was in Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5-8). The angry attitude took us through a time when Christians expressed their faith in anger toward certain sins of certain sinners. These sinners did not feel a God of love and compassion but one who was out to get them. Preachers often delighted in messages of condemnation that drove folks away from the gospel of mercy and grace. Remember, we react to the world on the basis of the kind of God we think exists. Look at Jesus, and represent Him well. Christlikeness is godliness.
