Throughout history there have been those who have taken the necessary risks in order to rescue. A few examples of the sacrifices are: Sheltering Jews from antisemites. Underground railroad for slaves. Protecting the persecuted. Hospitality to strangers. Embracing poverty to save the poor. Embracing rejection to save the rejected. Being ostracized to come near the alien. Sometimes the risks are social rejection, loss of income, persecution, and maybe even loss of life. We were never promised that redemption would be without its dangers. Jesus knows about ministry risks.
“See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised.” Matthew 20:18-19 (NRSV)
