We cannot escape discovering the realities of who we are. Life has a way of boiling up, bringing out, and exposing what is in us. From the Christian perspective, all of these revelations should call us to the One who loves us unconditionally, to whom we cry out for healing. We can’t escape these disclosures of ourselves, nor should we try. Setting up false realities to deal with who we really are is a way to avoid recovery and healing. Even these revelations are acts of mercy that expose our hearts to us; not so we may be condemned, but so that we might be healed. These enable us to grow in sanctification toward maturity.
“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.” (Psalm 139:1–6 ESV).
