We are certainly to “contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). The truths of the gospel of the kingdom, incarnation, and resurrection of Jesus are to be preserved. But here, I speak of another problem; those who think it is their sole duty to set the church straight. Sometimes it is forcing non-essentials on the church as its essentials. Sometimes it is making sure the church aligns with a national agenda. These and other attempts are driven by the fear that this or that is going to destroy the church. Peter thought he could save Jesus with a sword and a servant lost an ear. Church saviors end up wounding more than ears. This fear is thinking that if we do not defend Him or it, that the church is defenseless. Saviors of the church may unknowingly end up with a Messiah complex; they shift themselves to the center forcing the real Messiah to the side. We need to caution ourselves to be careful and not place so much weight on our opinions. The real savior of the church is the Savior Jesus; He is fully capable of finishing what He set out to do.
“I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it” (Matthew 16:18).
