Throughout the ages rocks and mountains with their caves have been sources of refuge. There are times we need such places of protection. The Psalmist found such a place in the temple at worship. “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord”. (Psalm 27:4–6 ESV). His Presence is both our fleeing-to-place and the place in which we abide even when we can’t flee. He is enough in either case. He is our Higher Place to dwell.
“Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.” (Psalm 61:1–3 ESV).
