Chariots were the war tanks of the ancient world. Every army coveted them. They had a great advantage over the foot soldier. Egypt had them in abundance, but they proved to be no advantage in God’s great rescue. Solomon accumulated horses and chariots, trusted in them and destroyed Israel. When God’s true King came, the Messiah, the Anointed One, He rode a donkey. It was God’s renunciation of a military solution to the problems of the world. So in preparation for Palm Sunday, the day of His Kingdom announcement, He sent His disciples looking for a donkey.
“Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” Psalm 20:6-7 (NIV)
