The Greek believed in the natural immortality of the soul as a way to escape what they would have called “this evil world”.  The contrary message brought by the Christian faith was that creation was good because God said so.  Something had gone terribly wrong in the fall.  Things were no longer right like they had been, and God was going to have to put it right. The Eternal Son came to rescue and restore creation.

“God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good” Genesis 1:31a (NASB).
