Our reactions are as important as our actions.  If someone speaks a hurtful word to us, we are to speak a healing word to them.  Jesus taught us that we are to respond to curses with blessings.  Harsh words need kind responses.  If people are having a bad day, and say something they will regret later, do not add to it by making a bad day for yourself.  This is not easy.  It requires patience and grace.  It requires self-discipline.  The Lord of grace will help us to show grace in our reactions.

“Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” Luke 6:28 (NASB)
