Joseph’s brothers rejected him out of jealousy. This rejection caused great pain to Joseph, and his presumed death was devastating to Joseph’s father. A whole family mourned. Jacob lived a large part of his life in pain for his absent son. The brothers’ failure to love Joseph, even in his immaturity, expressed itself as rejection. This rejection devastated a whole family. Another Father wept over the rejection of His Son and, in love, offered the rejected Son as Savior for all.
“So they took Joseph’s tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood. Then they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said, “We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son’s tunic or not?” And he recognized it and said, “It is my son’s tunic. A wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces.” Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.” Genesis 37:31-34 (NKJV)
