We were once clothed with the corrupt old self.  We came to Christ to be clothed with a new self.  To illustrate this, early baptisms were marked by a change of clothing.  Not putting off the wet and putting on the dry, but putting off the old and putting on the new.  The old clothes were immodest, being “deluded by lust”.  The new clothes are about “true righteousness and holiness.”  This change of attire marks a new beginning for intentionally living the Godly way.

“You were taught to put away your former way of life, your old self, corrupt and deluded by its lusts, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22-24 (NRSV)
