Putting ourselves in the place of those who have lived their lives for generations in the face of racial hostility with all of its consequences is far more difficult to do than we naively think. Cultural clichés and tribal thinking will not get us there. We need to get ourselves inside the Golden Rule and get it inside of us to be Christlike when it comes to racism. An incarnational faith requires that we sit where they sit with open eyes and listening ears. “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets” Matthew 7:12 (NASB).
Lord, You came to a despised race of people called Jews. You became one of them and their history. You did not merely put yourself in their place in some vicarious kind of way; You totally entered it by incarnation. By Your great love, You have shown us how to break down barriers. Amen!
