David said, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! (Psalm 139:7–8 ESV). John said, “God is Love”. His Spirit is the Spirit of Love. When God is there, love is there. We may turn our love off like a faucet, but God cannot; love is who He is, love is what He does. There is nowhere in the universe that you can flee from it; there is no hiding from it nor escaping it. “Neither death nor life…will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38–39 ESV). Also, Moses testified that “The glory of the Lord is consuming fire” Exodus 24:17 (ESV). The writer of Hebrews, in “reverence and awe”, saw God as a “consuming fire” that shakes all things that can be shaken and leaves what cannot be shaken. What cannot be shaken is God’s unshakable Kingdom (Hebrews 12:18–29); it is a Kingdom of Love. To those who have come to embrace this consuming fire they have found it to be a sanctifying fire. To those who reject the Christ-revealed God, it becomes painful fire.
“For everyone will be salted with fire” (Mark 9:49 ESV).
