Prayer is more than an exercise in words toward God. In prayer, deep confessions help us learn about ourselves. Contrary to what we think, we do not know ourselves as well as we suppose we do. Prayer teaches us to become honest with God. In prayer, we learn to forgive, adjust, reorient and release. In prayer, we learn to trust with our whole heart, obey with our whole life and love with our whole being. Go to prayer. Let your Teacher teach you through it. Let Him instruct you in the way you should go.
“I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, or I shall be like those who go down to the Pit. Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning, for in you I put my trust. Teach me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.” Psalm 143:6-8 (NRSV)
