Jesus never gives His followers the option to hate their persecutors; He commands that we love and pray for them (Matthew 5:43-44). Shockingly, He told us to rejoice when it happens. That takes more than willpower, it takes a special Spirit-endued energy. By this energy powerful witnesses have converted persecutors. Stephen’s witness was a seed that later exploded in Paul’s mind and heart. Jesus exemplified this kind of praying for persecutors from His own cross. To practice it is another form of Christlikeness.
“God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.” Matthew 5:11-12 (NLT)
