We live in a time where the great mantra is, “Please yourself.” This does not work according to the Christian blueprint for community. We know that we are to serve each other, but we have forgotten that; “not offending” the weak among us (Rom 14:15-21) is also a form of serving. “It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles” (Rom 14:21). Reckless individualism dismembers Christ’s body and can destroy community.
“We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For Christ did not please himself.” Romans 15:1-3a (ESV)
