The Christian’s devotional life, among others things, is seeking to live in the conscious awareness of God’s presence. Our attention spans need discipline in the barrage of images that assault us. Without commitment to the “one thing needful” we get lost in the trees. Our focus needs daily adjustment. The first step in all of this is a surrendered heart. A heart that is honed in on its Lord, with a desire to be near Him, becomes a devoted heart.
“But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her” Luke 10:41-42 (NRSV).
