Jesus steered His disciples away from the coveted titles of the day, “Rabbi”, “Father”, “Teacher”. He taught that preferring exalted titles could end in humiliation (Matthew 23:7-12). He was teaching humility, besides, He reminded them that they were all equals as students/brothers, with no hierarchy (v. 8). “And don’t let anyone call you ‘Teacher,’ for you have only one teacher, the Messiah” (v. 10 NLT). Of course, in the epistles we learn that God has given teachers to the church. Remember this, Messiah is always the Teacher to Whom all teachers should point. Every believer is to look to Messiah who teaches us by His Spirit. He not only teaches the word, He is the Word. The Father has commanded us to hear His beloved Son (Matthew 17:4-8).
