In Hebrew and Greek the words for “wind, breath and spirit” are the same in those respective languages. Dr. Timothy Green reminds us that the idea expressed in all of these is “moving air”. Sometimes this is the “rushing mighty wind” of Pentecost, sometimes it is the gentle breath of God on our souls. What Jesus breathed out, the disciples were to breathe in. As His apprentices we are to have “one breath” with Him. The Spirit that was in Jesus is the Spirit that is in us.
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” John 20:21-22 (NASB)
