Jesus give us the way of forgiveness and how not to retaliate on the cross. Heaven’s angelic armies were a voice call away. The voice that could have called angels called on God to forgive His enemies and all sinners. Jesus in His sinlessness and innocence was totally undeserving of the evil done to Him. Mind you, this was not a few bad things. In the last day of Jesus’ earthly life all hell came marching against Him through His enemies. Conspiring Judeans, crucifying Romans, the mocking multitude, not to mention demons whispering into his ears, assailed Him. But in the midst of all that madness He was not mad but forgave. I often heard anger and mad used as synonyms. And that is not too far afield. In our fallen world of imperfect, hurt and maladjusted people, forgiveness is the only way to live that will preserve our own sanity. We crucified God and He forgave us. So why can’t we forgive those who crucify us? The Spirit of the forgiving Christ in us helps us to forgive also.
